that sounds like a small product note. it is actually a routing change, and routing is where most people lose the value of AI. about 85% of people have access to AI and about 25% use it on real work (IBM 2026 Global CEO Study). the gap is not the model. it is that the work never gets handed over cleanly, and half of that is handing it to the wrong surface.

the honest answer is that the surface should match where the material lives, not which app you happen to have open. here is how i route it across the four.

the three-step rule for deciding
if you want one rule instead of a table, this is it. run these three questions in order and stop at the first clear answer.
- where does the material live? on a web page, use the side panel. on your machine, use the desktop app. this one question settles most cases.
- how long is the work? a quick read, check, or extraction belongs where you already are. a long build belongs somewhere you can sit.
- does it touch code or a deploy? if yes, it is claude code, regardless of the first two answers.

the side panel can act on the page, which is exactly why it is useful and exactly why it deserves a slower start. anthropic added a separate check that reviews an action against what you originally asked for before anything consequential, meaning form submissions, messages, and file downloads (anthropic, august 12, 2026). irreversible or costly actions such as purchases or sharing personal data still need your explicit permission, and anthropic recommends starting on sites you trust.
