the version of claude that does the work, not just answers about it, is only as useful as the tasks you give it. and not every task is a fit. you get the most out of it when you can recognize the shape of the work that is. three patterns cover almost all of it.

this builds on what claude cowork actually is. if you can spot these three shapes in your week, you know what to hand off.

pattern one: the task takes several steps

if a job is gather, compare, research, draft, format, it is a fit. in one ask, claude does the whole arc instead of you running each step and stitching them together. the tell is that you would normally do it in five sittings.

for example: triage a week of customer-feedback emails into themes with a quote for each. or pull figures from three reports and a spreadsheet and assemble one dashboard.

pattern two: the work lives in real files

when the output needs to be a real artifact, a word doc, a spreadsheet, a deck, a pdf, saved in the format you actually use, it is a fit. and the inputs are real too: claude reads the existing files in your folder, edits them, and saves changes back. a chatbot can write you a new document. this works on the files you already have.

for example: a formatted client proposal built from your standard template and the meeting notes. or a monthly metrics report assembled from raw spreadsheets, with the charts.

pattern three: the work spans multiple tools

when the task touches gmail, slack, your calendar, your crm, the systems where you already operate, it is a fit. claude reaches them through your connectors, gathers the context, and runs the whole sequence as one delegation instead of you querying each tool and pasting the results together.

for example: drafting follow-up emails after a meeting from the calendar invite, the attendee list, and the notes. or searching slack for everything the team said about a launch and synthesizing it into an update.

the throughline is the same across all three: work that used to mean juggling steps, files, and tools in your own head can now be handed off as a single task. when you spot that shape, give it away.

then make it run without you

two things turn a one-off delegation into leverage.

scheduled tasks. do the task once, confirm the output is right, then set it to run on a cadence: a friday review of what shipped, a monthly metrics roll-up on the first, a morning brief on the day's meetings. you set it once and it runs while you work on something else. keep it drafting for your review until you trust it.

start one from your phone. a task does not have to start at your desk. you can hand claude a job from the mobile app, the work runs on your computer with the same files and permissions, and you get a notification when it is done. the idea you have in line for coffee becomes a deliverable waiting when you get back.
