which claude plan do i need? the plain claude plan calculator

most claude cost tools count api tokens for developers. this one answers the question everyone else is asking: which plan should i pay for?

pick the plan by how often you hit your limit, not by features. rarely: pro at $20 a month. most days, or claude code every day: max at $100. all-day agent work that the 5-hour limit keeps stopping: ultra at $200. two or more people who need shared projects or one bill: team. something that runs without you in the chat: the api.

1. who is it for?
2. what do you use it for most?
3. what are you on now?
4. how often does it stop you with a usage limit?
5. anything else?

claude plans and prices right now

anthropic sells four individual plans and a team plan. it publishes usage as multiples of pro, not as message counts, because how fast you reach a limit depends on the model, the length of your chats and the size of your files.

planpriceusage, as anthropic states italso included
free$0limited, every 5 hours and every weekchat, web search, files, artifacts, up to 5 projects. no claude code.
pro$20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front)1x, the baselineclaude code, research, projects, claude in chrome. fable only through paid usage credits.
max$100 a month, monthly only5x pro every 5 hours and every weekfable up to half your weekly limit, $100 a month in api credits, priority at busy times
ultra$200 a month, monthly onlyno 5-hour limit for verified accounts, 10x pro every weekeverything in max, $200 a month in api credits
team, standard seat$25 a seat a month, or $20 billed annually1.25x pro per session, plus a weekly limitshared projects, central billing, single sign-on, admin controls. at least 2 seats, up to 150.
team, premium seat$125 a seat a month, or $100 billed annually6.25x pro per session, plus a weekly limitfable up to half the weekly limit. seats can be mixed with standard.

team plans pool monthly api credits across seats, capped at $500 a month. anthropic's own example: three standard and two premium seats get $260 a month, which works out to $20 per standard seat and $100 per premium seat. more than 150 seats means enterprise. prices are us prices before tax and vary by region.

    how the calculator decides

it starts from the plan you are on and how often its limit stops you, because that is the one usage figure you can actually see.

    1. rarely stopped: stay where you are. on free, move to pro only if you need claude code, research or more projects.
    2. a few times a month: stay, and buy usage credits for the heavy days instead of paying for a bigger plan all month.
    3. most days, or out of the whole week: move up one step: free to pro, pro to max, max to ultra.
    4. claude code or long agent work every day starts at max, and at ultra when the 5-hour limit is the thing stopping you.
    5. fable most days means max or higher, where it is included up to half the weekly limit instead of paid per use.
    6. teams get standard seats for everyone and premium seats for the people who use it all day. the calculator also prices the same people on separate pro and max plans, so you can see what team's shared projects and single bill cost you.

matching your answers to a plan is a judgment call built on anthropic's published multiples, not a measurement of your account. your real usage is in settings, under usage.

    common questions

which claude plan do i need?

Start from how often you hit your limit. If you rarely do, Pro at $20 a month is enough. If you hit it most days, or you code with Claude Code every day, Max at $100 gives five times Pro's usage. Ultra at $200 removes the 5-hour limit for verified accounts and gives ten times Pro's weekly usage. Two or more people who need shared projects or one bill should look at Team.

is claude max worth it over pro?

It is worth it when Pro's limit stops your work most days. Max costs five times Pro and gives five times Pro's usage every 5 hours and every week, plus Fable up to half the weekly limit and $100 a month in API credits. If you only hit the limit now and then, stay on Pro and buy usage credits for the heavy days.

how much does claude team cost?

Team needs at least two members. A Standard seat is $25 a month billed monthly or $20 billed annually and includes 1.25 times Pro's per-session usage. A Premium seat is $125 monthly or $100 annually and includes 6.25 times Pro's per-session usage. You can mix seat types.

should i use the claude api instead of a plan?

Use the API when something runs on Claude without you in the chat, such as an app or an automation. You pay per token. Max, Ultra and Team plans now include monthly API credits, so a small automation can be covered by the plan you already pay for.
