ai consultant rate calculator: what should you charge for ai work?

elisabeth hitz · rates checked november 2, 2026

most pricing guides for ai work are written for the buyer. this one is for you, the person sending the quote.

to set a rate for ai work, divide what you need to earn, plus tax and costs, by the hours you can really bill. compare that floor with the market for your level of proof, then quote the project, not the hour. the calculator does all three and writes the quote.

1. what are you selling?
2. how much proof do you have?
3. what do you need to earn?

tax and billable hours start at upwork's own planning figures: 25 percent set aside, and 60 percent of a 40-hour week billable. change them to fit you.

the hours for each job are starting estimates, not market data. use your own if you have them.

what ai work pays right now

there is no single market rate for ai work. a worldwide marketplace, an agency directory, and a government contract price are three different markets, so pick the one your clients actually buy in.

wherewhat it showswho it covers
upwork, ai consultants$35 to $60 an hour; the most experienced at $100 or morefreelancers on a worldwide marketplace
clutch, ai consulting firms31 of the 47 firms with a listed rate on page one charge under $100 an hour; 16 charge $100 to $199agencies worldwide
it jobs watch, uk ai consultantsmedian £575 a day; 10th to 90th percentile £445 to £715; 69 rates in the 6 months to november 2, 2026uk contract job ads
gsa calc, us federalmedian $193.66 an hour; middle half $142 to $258; 181 recordsfederal contract ceiling rates for titles matching "artificial intelligence"

the bands in step 2 come from this table, but none of these sources sort people by proof, so matching a band to a level is a judgment call, not a measured fact. "no paying clients yet" uses upwork's range. "a few paid projects" uses clutch's most common listed band. "results i can show" runs from upwork's $100 experienced mark to clutch's top listed band. "specialist, big clients" uses the federal middle half, which is a ceiling price and includes engineering roles, so treat it as an upper reference.

how the calculator works

your floor is your income goal grossed up for tax, plus costs, divided by your billable hours for the year. the rate you see is the higher of that floor and the bottom of your market band, rounded up to the next $5.

  1. option 1 is your hours times your rate, plus a 20 percent cushion for scope surprises. the cushion is a planning assumption in this calculator, not a market figure.
  2. option 2 adds one month of support.
  3. option 3 adds three months of support and a 3-hour team session.
  4. payback is option 2 divided by what the client saves each week: hours saved times what those hours cost them.

how to say the number

send three options, lead with the middle one, and talk about the client's payback before your price. three options turn "yes or no" into "which one." it is the same menu i teach creators in the three-option rate menu. if someone pushes back, take scope out instead of cutting the rate.

common questions

how much should i charge as an ai consultant?

Start with your own floor: what you need to earn, plus tax and costs, divided by the hours you can really bill. Then compare it with the market. Upwork puts AI consultants at $35 to $60 an hour, with the most experienced at $100 or more. Federal contract ceiling rates with AI in the title have a median near $194.

should i charge by the hour or by the project for ai work?

Quote the project. AI work gets faster as you get better at it, so hourly pricing pays you less for improving. Use your hourly rate privately to check the project fee covers your time, then show the client the outcome and one price.

how much should i charge to set up claude or a chatbot for a small business?

Multiply your rate by your honest hours, then add a cushion for scope surprises. This calculator uses 20 percent. Then check the payback: hours saved a week times what those hours cost the client. If the client earns the fee back in a few months, the price is easy to defend.

why is my rate higher than what i see on upwork?

Upwork's figure is a worldwide marketplace rate. Your floor also covers tax, business costs, time off, and the hours you spend finding clients. If your floor sits above the market band for your level of proof, you can bill more hours, narrow your offer, or build proof before raising the number.
