claude duet vs claude cowork: which one should run your small business admin?
on october 21, 2026, anthropic opened a research preview of claude duet, an app where claude works as a proactive agent. it is a claude that comes to you instead of waiting to be asked, and that changes which admin jobs a small business should hand over, and where.
claude cowork waits for you: you describe a piece of work, and it plans the steps and delivers a result. claude duet comes to you: it runs on its own cloud computer, watches the apps you connect, sends a morning brief, and asks before it sends, pays, signs, or deletes. use cowork for projects and duet for recurring admin.
that is the split. the rest of this note is what duet actually is, how it lines up against cowork, what it will never do without your approval, what it costs you in usage, and which admin jobs belong on which side.
what anthropic launched on october 21
duet is a separate claude app that keeps working when you step away, and checks in with you instead of waiting for a prompt. anthropic's release notes list it under october 21, 2026 as a research preview (anthropic release notes, oct 21 2026), and its launch article opens it to pro, max, and ultra subscribers in the us (anthropic, introducing claude duet, accessed nov 2 2026).
it runs on a cloud computer of its own and works through the apps you have connected to claude. your existing connected apps, memory, and skills carry over from your claude account, so there is little to set up (anthropic, introducing claude duet, accessed nov 2 2026). you talk to it in one ongoing thread, by typing or by voice. each morning it sends a short brief on the most important items across your connected apps, and through the day it messages you only when something needs your attention (anthropic, introducing claude duet, accessed nov 2 2026).
it runs on claude opus 5.5 and decides for itself how much effort a job needs; you cannot pick the model (claude help center, get started with claude duet, accessed nov 2 2026). it is available as a standalone app on ios and android, and on a computer on the web at claude.ai (claude duet product page, accessed nov 2 2026).
duet vs cowork, side by side
the difference is who starts the work: in cowork you hand claude a task, in duet claude watches for tasks and brings them to you. everything else in the table follows from that.
| what you are comparing | claude cowork | claude duet |
|---|---|---|
| who starts the work | you, by describing an outcome | duet, by noticing something in your connected apps, or you, by asking in the thread |
| how you talk to it | a task you set in motion and come back to | one ongoing thread, typed or spoken, plus a morning brief |
| where it works | sessions run in the cloud and reach your files and browser through the desktop app, plus your connected apps | its own cloud computer and the apps you connect; it keeps running after you close the app |
| what it asks before acting | you pick the mode: auto is the default on pro, max, ultra, and team, manual asks first, and permanent file deletes need your ok | designed to wait for approval before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything |
| who can get it today | any paid claude plan, on desktop, web, mobile, and in the chrome side panel | us pro, max, and ultra subscribers, by waitlist; not team or enterprise yet |
| best fit | projects that end in a file: a brief, a deck, a report, a cleaned spreadsheet | recurring watching and chasing: missed messages, overdue invoices, things that slipped |
the cowork column is the model i laid out in what claude cowork actually is: chat asks, cowork does. duet adds a third posture. it is closer to an assistant who reads your inbox before you do than to a contractor you brief. that is also why the briefing advice in how to brief claude cowork does not carry over one to one: with duet, the brief is the set of apps you connect and the corrections you give it in the thread.
what duet asks before it acts
four kinds of action are designed to wait for you: sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, and deleting anything. before any of them, duet shows you exactly what it is about to do and waits for your approval (anthropic, introducing claude duet, accessed nov 2 2026).
two design choices matter for a business owner. purchases go through a one-time card from link, stripe's wallet, limited to a given merchant and amount, so an approval cannot quietly turn into an open card. and duet never sees your passwords, your browser cookies, or the sign-in tokens for your connected apps (anthropic, claude duet safety, privacy, and security, accessed nov 2 2026).
anthropic is also plain about the limits. its product page says duet may misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent, and that it can miss something that arrives between check-ins with you (claude duet product page, accessed nov 2 2026). its safety page adds that the safeguards will occasionally miss something or flag a harmless message (anthropic, claude duet safety, privacy, and security, accessed nov 2 2026). read that as the job description: duet surfaces and drafts, you decide. it is the same draft-and-approve rule i use for cowork in how to use claude cowork safely.
which admin jobs go where
give duet the recurring jobs whose cost is forgetting; keep in cowork the jobs whose cost is effort. anthropic's own duet examples are finding missed gmail and slack messages, drafting invoice reminders from quickbooks or stripe, and preparing payroll in gusto (anthropic, introducing claude duet, accessed nov 2 2026). here is how that maps onto a small business week:
- the client message nobody answered: duet. it is watching the inbox and slack anyway, and the morning brief is where the forgotten thread shows up.
- the invoice that is 14 days late: duet. it can draft the reminder from your billing app; you approve the send.
- payroll prep: duet, with you approving. preparation is the work; the payment itself still waits for your sign-off.
- the quarterly brief from a spreadsheet: cowork. a defined piece of work with inputs, steps, and a file at the end.
- the proposal, the deck, the cleaned client list: cowork. you start it, you shape it, you come back to a deliverable.
- anything you would not let a new hire do without asking: neither, yet. run it through the approval loop for a few weeks first.
if you are still deciding what is worth handing off at all, the three kinds of work to delegate is the sorting step that comes before either tool.
what it costs: your usage limits
duet is included in pro, max, and ultra during the preview, but it draws on the same usage limits as the rest of claude. anthropic says its background checks count toward those limits, and larger tasks take more model turns and background work (anthropic, introducing claude duet, accessed nov 2 2026).
so the real cost is not a new bill. it is that an agent checking your apps all day spends from the same allowance as your chats, your cowork sessions, and your claude code. on a plan that already runs close to its limits, connect duet to one job, not five. the monthly api credits on max and team, which i covered in claude max vs team api credits, pay for your own apps and agents on the api; duet runs on your plan's limits instead.
how to start without handing it too much
start duet on one recurring job, watch it for a week, then let it act with your approval.
- check you can get it. us pro, max, or ultra, through the waitlist; invitations go out in waves, and team and enterprise are not included yet (claude help center, accessed nov 2 2026).
- pick one recurring admin job. the one you keep missing. connect only the apps that job needs.
- read the morning brief for a week before asking it to act. note what it flags well, what it misses, and what it over-flags.
- approve every send and payment yourself. read each one. that review is the safety system, not a formality.
- keep project work in cowork. briefs, decks, reports, anything that ends in a file you set in motion.
the takeaway
cowork made claude something you delegate to. duet makes it something that comes back to you with the work you forgot. for a small business, the useful question is not which one is better; it is which of your jobs fail because nobody started them, and which fail because nobody remembered them. the first kind goes to cowork. the second kind is what duet is for, as long as you keep reading what it puts in front of you before you press approve.
common questions
What is Claude Duet, and how is it different from Claude Cowork?
Claude Duet is a research preview app Anthropic opened on October 21, 2026, in which Claude works as a proactive agent. It runs on its own cloud computer, keeps an eye on the apps you connect, sends you a short morning brief, and messages you when something needs a decision. Claude Cowork works the other way around: you start it by describing a piece of work, and it plans the steps and delivers the result. Duet comes to you; Cowork waits for you.
Can I get Claude Duet on a Claude Team plan for my small business?
Not yet. Anthropic's product page and help article say the research preview is for Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers in the US, through a waitlist, with invitations sent in waves. Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet. If your business runs on a Team plan, the owner who wants to try Duet needs a personal Pro, Max, or Ultra plan for now.
Does Claude Duet cost extra, or does it use up my normal Claude usage limits?
It is included with Pro, Max, and Ultra during the preview, but it is not free capacity. Anthropic says Duet uses the same usage limits as the rest of Claude, and its background checks count toward them, with larger tasks taking more model turns. A busy Duet can therefore leave less room for your own chats, Cowork sessions, and Claude Code on the same plan.
Will Claude Duet send emails or pay invoices on its own without asking me first?
Anthropic says no. Before Duet sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything, it shows you exactly what it is about to do and waits for your approval. Purchases go through a one-time card from Link, Stripe's wallet, limited to one merchant and amount. Anthropic also warns that Duet can misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent, so read what it shows you before you approve.
