claude docs, slides, design or a chat reply: which should you ask for?
on september 16, 2026 anthropic began merging claude cowork and chat into one claude, and added claude docs and claude slides. the choice you used to make before every task, chat or cowork, is going away. the choice that replaces it is what you ask claude to make.
now that cowork and chat are one claude, you do not pick a mode, you pick an output. ask for a chat reply when you need an answer, a task when the work has steps, a doc when others will edit it, slides when you will present it, and a design when it has to look on brand.
what changed on september 16
cowork and chat became one conversation, and three things you can ask claude to make now live inside it: docs, slides and design.
anthropic's announcement says cowork and chat are merging into one claude, so you no longer decide where a task goes before you start (Anthropic, 16 sep 2026). the same release added claude docs and claude slides, and brought claude design into conversations (Anthropic, 16 sep 2026). all three are in beta on paid plans (Anthropic, 16 sep 2026).
anthropic's reason is one most owners will recognize. it built cowork as a separate place for bigger work and design for visual work. people used both, and told anthropic the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged, and that what they started in one did not carry into the other (Anthropic, 16 sep 2026).
two details from anthropic's help center are worth knowing before it reaches your account. if your message box still shows separate chat and cowork options, you do not have the new experience yet (Claude Help Center, accessed 22 sep 2026). once your account moves over, you cannot switch back to the separate options (Claude Help Center, accessed 22 sep 2026).

each output fits a different job: an answer, a finished file, a document other people edit, a deck you present, or a visual that has to look on brand. the first four columns come from anthropic's announcement and help center. the last column is my call, from setting claude up for small businesses and creators.

the plan column is the one to read twice. the merged experience and the three new outputs are rolling out on different terms, so two people on different plans can see different things this month.
how to ask so claude makes the right thing
name the output. anthropic has not published how claude decides between a quick reply and a longer task, so the part you control is the ask: what it is for, who reads it, and what form it takes.

that is the promise, and on a quick question you can leave it there. on work that goes in front of a client, i would not. anthropic's own tip for docs is that a good request says what the doc is for, who will read it, and what it should cover (Claude Help Center, accessed 22 sep 2026). the same shape works for every output. if something is unclear, anthropic says claude asks (Anthropic, 16 sep 2026).
you can also skip the guessing. the message box has an output menu that includes docs and design, and starting a request with /docs asks for a doc directly (Claude Help Center, accessed 22 sep 2026). here is how the same client job reads as four different asks:
- a reply: "what are the three things i should check before i sign this brand contract?"
- a doc: "draft a one-page partnership brief from my notes, for the brand's marketing lead, covering deliverables, dates and usage rights."
- slides: "turn that brief into five slides i can present on thursday's call."
- a design: "make a one-page media kit that matches my brand colors."

the move worth making first: one report, one deck, one conversation
hand claude one deliverable you rebuild yourself every week, and ask for the doc and the deck in the same conversation, so the slides match the report.
anthropic's own example is a weekly report due at noon, asked for before you head out, with the highlights in five slides for the leadership meeting (Anthropic, 16 sep 2026). because both come out of the same conversation, anthropic says the slides already match the report. its getting-started advice points the same way: try the next report or deck you would normally build yourself (Anthropic, 16 sep 2026). for a small business, that is usually the monday numbers. for a creator, it is the brand pitch and the deck that goes with it.
- pick one recurring deliverable. the report, brief or deck you rebuild every week or every pitch. one, not five.
- give it the context once. point claude at the files and connected apps the deliverable is built from, instead of pasting them into each conversation. why that beats chat history is in files, not chats.
- ask for the doc, then the slides, in the same conversation. name what each one is for, who reads it and what it covers.
- fix it yourself, then comment. edit a line directly and leave a comment for claude where you want a change. your edits are the brief for the next run.
- keep the check-ins, then schedule. the permission setting in the message box defaults to manual, where claude asks before it takes actions (Claude Help Center, accessed 22 sep 2026). leave it there until the deliverable has run clean a few times, then schedule it. my checklist for a setup where a mistake cannot reach what matters is in how to use claude cowork safely.
who gets it, and when
pro and max get the merged claude first, over the next few weeks. team, free and enterprise follow on different terms, and docs, slides and design are paid-plan features in beta.

claude docs and claude design are listed in beta on pro, max, team and enterprise, and not on free (Claude Help Center, accessed 22 sep 2026). on enterprise, both stay off until an owner turns them on (Claude Help Center, accessed 22 sep 2026).
three limits matter if you work with clients. a doc on a team or enterprise plan cannot be shared outside your organization yet (Claude Help Center, accessed 22 sep 2026). opening a shared doc requires a claude account (Claude Help Center, accessed 22 sep 2026). deleting a doc is permanent, with no trash (Claude Help Center, accessed 22 sep 2026). so when a client needs the file, export it, and keep your own copy.
if you run the claude for small business plugin, it lives in cowork, and anthropic says your chats, projects, artifacts, connectors and skills are where you left them (Anthropic, 16 sep 2026). that plugin has been installed more than 900,000 times since it launched in may (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). which of its workflows to turn on first is in which claude for small business workflow should you run first.
the takeaway
the merge removes a decision. it does not make the next one for you. stop choosing between chat and cowork and start naming the output: a reply, a task, a doc, slides or a design. then hand claude one deliverable you rebuild every week, in one conversation, with the check-ins on, and schedule it only once it runs clean. if you want the background on what cowork was built to do, it is in what claude cowork actually is.

will my cowork projects, connectors and skills still be there after the merge?
yes. anthropic says your chats, projects, artifacts, connectors and skills are where you left them, and its help center says your chats, tasks, projects and settings come with you when your account moves over. once your account has the new experience, you cannot switch back to separate chat and cowork options.
