which claude for small business workflow should you run first?
on september 15, 2026 anthropic took claude for small business from a back-office helper to 43 ready-to-run workflows. more choice makes the first pick harder, and the first pick is the one that decides whether you keep going.
for most owners, start with the monday brief. reporting was the job owners asked claude for most often outside marketing, the brief can run on any of the 37 partner connectors or a plain spreadsheet, and it builds a page for you instead of sending anything to a customer. add a second workflow once you trust what it reports.
what changed on september 15
claude for small business now covers growing the business as well as running it: anthropic added workflows for leads, proposals and marketing, plus a batch of new integrations. it is a plugin that puts claude inside the tools a small business already uses, with ready-to-run workflows on top.
claude for small business now includes 43 workflows (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). the release added 27 new integrations, including shopify, salesforce, tiktok, xero, gusto, square, stripe and zapier (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). anthropic says the plugin has been installed more than 900,000 times since it launched in may (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). that figure counts installs, not businesses.
it is available on every paid claude plan, and anthropic recommends the team plan once more than one person in the business uses it (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). i covered what the original launch did and did not do in claude for small business: what it means. this post is about the choice the new release puts in front of you.
one timing note. the plugin runs in claude cowork, and one day after this release, anthropic announced that cowork and chat are merging into one claude, rolling out to pro and max plans over the coming weeks, with team and free plans to follow (Anthropic, 16 sep 2026). anthropic says anyone working in cowork will find their chats, projects, connectors and skills where they left them.
the five main workflows, side by side
each workflow takes one recurring job off your week, reads from a different set of tools, and stops at a different point for your ok. the first four columns are drawn from anthropic's release. the last column is my call, from setting claude up on real small businesses.
| workflow | the job it takes | what it can read from | where it waits for you | start here if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
monday brief/monday-brief | cash, last week's sales, pipeline, overdue invoices and the three things that need you, on one page | any of 37 partner connectors, or an uploaded spreadsheet | nothing goes out; it is a page for you to read | you cannot see your numbers without opening four tools |
speed to lead/speed-to-lead | qualifies after-hours inquiries, drafts a reply with real openings from your calendar, logs it to your crm | 15 connectors, or an inquiry you forward | the reply waits for your ok unless you let it run on its own | leads go cold overnight or over the weekend |
proposal builder/proposal-builder | turns a voice memo, photos or an rfp into a branded proposal priced from your past jobs | 17 connectors, or a past proposal you upload as the template | it goes out for signature only after you approve | quotes sit on your desk for days |
social content engine/social-content-engine | next week's posts in your voice with on-brand graphics; /marketing-monday adds sales by channel and drafted review replies | 16 connectors, or exported sales and pasted reviews | everything is staged for your ok | marketing is the first thing to slip |
close the month/close-month | reconciles the books against sales, card spend and payroll, writes a plain-english p&l and a close packet for your accountant | 14 connectors, or uploaded bank and processor statements | it flags mismatches for you and builds the packet for your accountant | month end eats a weekend |
the connector counts are anthropic's own lists for each workflow (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). the no-connector route in the third column matters more than it looks. it means you can test a workflow on an export before you give it access to anything live.
why the monday brief goes first for most owners
it is the job owners asked for most, it needs the least trust to try, and it shows you whether claude reads your numbers correctly before you let it anywhere near a customer.
anthropic's head of u.s. smb, lina ochman, wrote up what more than 1,000 owners said on the spring claude smb tour. reporting was the single most common use case owners described, outside of marketing work (Anthropic, 10 sep 2026). about two-thirds of their requests were about running the business, and about a third were about growing it (Anthropic, 10 sep 2026).
the second reason is risk. a brief is a read, not a send. if it gets your cash position wrong, you catch it over coffee on monday, not after a customer has seen it. that makes it the cheapest way to learn how claude handles your data before you point it at leads, proposals or the books.
the exception is simple. if leads going cold is costing you real money this month, start with speed to lead instead. the rule underneath both: start where your week leaks, on the workflow with the least that can go wrong. i walked through the same logic for picking an automation in how to set up claude for a small business.
how to turn on your first workflow, in five steps
install it, connect only what the first workflow needs, keep it in approval mode, make claude show its work, and add the second workflow only after the first runs clean.
- install and onboard. anthropic's setup is to install the plugin, ask claude to help you get set up or run
/smb-onboard, connect the tools you already use and pick a task (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). pick one task, not five. - connect only what the first workflow needs. your existing software permissions carry over: if someone cannot see something in quickbooks or google drive today, they cannot see it through claude (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). connect less than you are allowed to anyway. my checklist for a setup where a mistake cannot reach what matters is in how to use claude cowork safely.
- leave it in approval mode. every workflow starts there: claude drafts and stages the work, then waits for your ok (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). you can let a workflow run on its own later, one workflow at a time, and switch it back whenever you want.
- make claude show its work. ochman describes owners on the tour who now ask claude to flag when it is assuming versus knowing, and to show its work on a bid after catching claude using the wrong measurements (Anthropic, 10 sep 2026). put both instructions in the first week of use.
- add the second workflow only after the first runs clean. a few real cycles without surprises is the signal. then pick the next place your week leaks and repeat steps two to four.
the data question owners ask first
data security is the most common reason small businesses hold back, and the defaults differ by plan, so check yours before you connect the books.
half the owners anthropic surveyed on the spring tour named data security as their biggest hesitation about using ai (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). on team and enterprise plans, anthropic does not train on your business data by default (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). anthropic also says you control whether your conversations are used to improve claude (Anthropic, 10 sep 2026). some workflows also stop short of the final step by design: payroll, for example, is staged in gusto for you to submit (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026).
the part that decides whether you keep going
picking the workflow is the easy part. getting the first one running is where owners stall, and anthropic's own tour data says hands-on help is what gets them through.
81% of the small business owners anthropic surveyed before launch said they were open to new ai tools (Anthropic, 10 sep 2026). being open is not the same as using it, which is the whole ai adoption gap. across 635 exit surveys from the tour, the most-cited highlight was the guided build session (Anthropic, 10 sep 2026). nearly two-thirds of attendees asked for hands-on help implementing ai after the workshop (Anthropic, 10 sep 2026).
"what closed the gap was time on the keyboard with someone nearby to help" (Lina Ochman, Anthropic, 10 sep 2026)
if you want that help for free, anthropic is putting a lot of it on the calendar. the second leg of its tour runs free half-day workshops in 10 u.s. cities (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). it started in boston on september 16 (Anthropic, 10 sep 2026). more than 150 organizations it trained as approved claude smb trainers will run over 750 workshops in their own communities (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). 14 integration partners are hosting free live webinars on their connectors, from notion on september 25 through atlassian on november 17 (Anthropic, 15 sep 2026). if the tool your first workflow depends on is on that list, that webinar is the one to book.
the takeaway
43 workflows is a menu, not a plan. turn on one, and for most owners that is the monday brief: it is the job owners asked for most, it sends nothing to anyone, and it tells you fast whether claude reads your business correctly. keep it in approval mode, make it show its work, and only then hand it the leads, the proposals or the books.
common questions
what is the first claude for small business workflow i should set up?
for most owners, the monday brief. anthropic reports that reporting was the most common job owners asked claude to do, outside of marketing work. the brief builds one page with cash, sales, pipeline and overdue invoices, so nothing goes out to a customer while you learn whether claude reads your numbers correctly. if leads going cold is your most expensive problem right now, start with speed to lead instead.
do i need to connect quickbooks or my other tools before claude for small business is useful?
no. every workflow anthropic describes has a route that works without connectors. the monday brief can work from an uploaded spreadsheet, speed to lead from an inquiry you forward, the proposal builder from a memo and a past proposal, and the month-end close from uploaded bank and processor statements. testing on an export first is a sensible way to check the output before you connect anything.
will claude for small business send emails or pay bills without asking me first?
not by default. anthropic says every workflow starts in approval mode: claude drafts and stages the work, then waits for your ok before anything sends, posts or pays. you can let a workflow run on its own one workflow at a time, and switch it back whenever you want. some workflows stop short of the last step, for example payroll is staged in gusto for you to submit.
does claude for small business still work now that claude cowork and chat are merging?
the plugin runs in claude cowork. on september 16, 2026 anthropic announced that cowork and chat are merging into one claude, rolling out to pro and max plans over the coming weeks, with team and free plans to follow. anthropic says what cowork can do becomes available from any conversation, with the skills and connectors you already have, and that anyone working in cowork will find their chats, projects, connectors and skills where they left them.
