Is the X algorithm actually open source?

Parts of it are. The ranking code is published at github.com/xai-org/x-algorithm. The live feed ranks with a learned transformer called Phoenix that you cannot run yourself, so the published signals tell you what that model is trained to predict rather than giving you hand-coded weights to game.

It grades a draft post against the reward signals the code optimises for, ranked by weight, and against the suppression patterns that get a post buried. It returns a signal score, the strongest signals hit, the suppression risks with an exact fix for each, a rewrite, and a deployment note on timing and link placement.

Which signals matter most?

Replies and quote posts are the heaviest, then bookmarks, then early velocity in the first thirty minutes, then dwell time, then media, with likes and reposts weighted lowest. Suppression signals are weighted more heavily than the positives, and show-less-like-this is the most common suppressor.
