why track ai brand visibility if nobody clicks anyway.

the objection is fair. if ai answers are killing clicks, why spend effort chasing a mention inside the thing that killed them? the data answers it more directly than you would expect.

you track ai brand visibility because the click did not disappear, it moved. when an ai answer sits on the page, the few clicks that still happen go overwhelmingly to the brands named inside that answer. citation is not a substitute for the click. citation is what produces the click now.

first, concede the premise

the skeptics are right about the direction. pew research center watched 68,879 real google searches: when an ai overview was present, users clicked a traditional result 8% of the time, against 15% without one. sparktoro's 2026 analysis found fewer than one in three google searches now sends a click anywhere at all, with the share of click-sending searches down 9.5 points since 2024. seer interactive measured organic ctr on queries with ai overviews falling from 1.76% to 0.61%.

so yes: the open web is getting fewer visits per question asked. anyone selling you ai visibility without conceding that is not being straight with you.

then look at where the remaining clicks go

here is the number that settles the argument. seer interactive compared brands on the same queries, cited versus not cited inside the ai answer. cited brands earned roughly 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited brands. same query, same page. the citation is the difference.

the pool of clicks is shrinking. the citation decides who drinks from what is left.

this is why "nobody clicks anymore" and "ai visibility matters" are not competing claims. the first is about the size of the pool. the second is about its distribution. both are true at once, and the second one is the one you can act on.

the part that never shows up in analytics

the deeper reason to track it: the losses are invisible. when a buyer asks an ai engine who to use and it names three competitors, that conversation appears in no analytics property you own. no impression, no lost-click report, no alert. the shortlist formed and you were not on it, and the only way to know is to go look at the answers yourself.

that is what tracking actually means here. not buying a dashboard, but knowing, for the handful of queries that precede spending in your category: are you named, who is named instead, and which sources taught the model its opinion.

what tracking looks like without a subscription

  • write down your money queries. five to ten questions a buyer types right before spending, in buyer language.
  • run them monthly on chatgpt, perplexity, and google. fresh sessions, so memory does not flatter you.
  • log three things per query: named or not, who was named instead, which sources the answer cited.
  • work the source list. the cited pages are where the model formed its opinion. that list is your queue, and reddit is on it more often than most brands expect: it is the second most cited domain in google's ai overviews at nearly 20% mention share.

a spreadsheet covers all of it. if you want the reading of your own site done for you, the free scan below grades how ai engines read it in about a minute.

free, about 60 seconds, no email asked. the audit exists for when the scan shows a gap worth closing.

one email when the next field note drops.

no course pitch, no daily emails. the notes, when they exist.
