claude in google docs, sheets, and slides: should you use the add-on or the connectors?

if your business runs on google docs and sheets, claude now works inside the files you already use. anthropic shipped it two ways at once, and picking the wrong one first is how a team ends up with claude editing the wrong thing.

the add-on puts claude in a sidebar inside the google doc, sheet, or deck you have open, and edits that file in place. the connectors work from the claude chat, where claude creates or edits google files. start in the file when the work lives in one file. start in claude when you need a new file or several.

what anthropic announced on october 6

anthropic released claude for google workspace, an add-on for google docs, sheets, and slides, plus new google docs, sheets, and slides connectors for claude itself. both are labeled beta.

the add-on is in public beta on all paid claude plans (anthropic, october 6, 2026).

you install it from the google workspace marketplace, open a file, and go to Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. admins can deploy it to the whole domain or to selected groups from the google admin console.

for a small team, the useful part is not that claude can write in a google doc. you could already paste text in and out. the useful part is that claude now sees the actual file, the actual selection, and the actual formatting, and changes it where it lives.

the add-on vs the connectors, side by side

the short answer: the add-on is for working on a file you already have open, and the connectors are for when claude should make or change files while you work in the chat. anthropic says starting from claude makes most sense when you need a new file or the work spans several files.

both share one rule that matters more than anything in the table: claude gets nothing your google account does not already have.

“Claude’s access matches your existing Google sharing permissions.” (anthropic, october 6, 2026)

that sentence is about the connectors, and it cuts both ways. it means claude cannot wander into files you cannot open. it also means that if your drive is shared loosely, claude inherits the mess. the order i recommend for connecting anything, files first and approvals always, is in the claude connectors guide.

what the add-on actually does in each app

in each app, claude works with the native features instead of pasting text over them: real formatting in docs, real formulas and charts in sheets, and your own layouts in slides. this is what anthropic lists for each one.

  • docs. claude can fix a sentence or restyle a heading in place without touching the formatting around it. for bigger rewrites it proposes edits as suggestion cards in the sidebar, each highlighting the passage it would change, and you apply or dismiss each one.
  • sheets. claude can write formulas, build pivot tables and native sheets charts, and add new tabs. for joins or data cleaning, it can pull a range into python and write the results back into the sheet.
  • slides. claude can build new slides from your deck's own layouts and themes so they match the rest of the deck, then check its work and flag elements that overlap, run off the slide, or are hard to read.

sheets is the one most small businesses will feel first. the old way, exporting a csv, pasting it into claude, and copying numbers back, is what how to use claude with spreadsheets was written for. that advice still holds for messy files: one clean header row, plainly named columns, and checking one total by hand. inside sheets, claude works on the real cells instead of a pasted copy, and a clean layout still makes its work far easier to check.

ask before edits or accept all edits?

keep the default, "ask before edits," on any file someone else relies on. in that mode each change appears as an approval card with a summary, and claude waits for you before making the edit.

the other mode, "accept all edits," lets claude make ordinary content edits without stopping. it still pauses on anything that touches links, outside images, web addresses, or who can access the file. that is fine on a scratch copy or a draft deck only you will touch. it is not what you want on the live pricing sheet, the client tracker, or the doc your team works from every day.

this is the same approval gate i put on every claude workflow that sends, posts, or changes something other people see. the same reasoning runs through claude code permission modes: the first week, you approve everything and watch what claude does, then loosen only where it has earned it.

a first week with claude in google workspace

turn on the add-on first, keep ask before edits on, and save the connectors for when you catch yourself copying between files. this order is my recommendation for a small team, not anthropic's guidance.

  1. install the add-on and open one real file. pick something you edit every week: the monthly numbers sheet, the proposal template, the client deck.
  2. give it one bounded job. "add a tab that totals spend by channel and chart it," or "tighten this summary and turn the next steps into a table." approve each card and read it before you do.
  3. check your sharing before you connect. look at who can open the folders that matter: your pricing, your clients, your finances. claude's access follows your google permissions, so fix anything shared wider than it should be before you turn the connectors on.
  4. turn on the connectors when the job spans files. a monthly report built from three sheets, or a new deck from a doc, is where starting in claude pays off. on team and enterprise plans, ask your owner to enable them.
  5. save the format as a skill. anthropic says the sidebar carries the same models, connectors, and skills you use in claude. once a report or deck format works, write it down once so the next one follows the same steps. prebuilt ai skills vs your own covers why your own version wins.

the takeaway

claude for google workspace is two tools, not one. the add-on works inside the file you have open. the connectors let claude build and edit google files from the chat. start with the add-on on one weekly file, leave ask before edits on, tidy your sharing, and turn on the connectors when the job needs more than one file. claude only reaches what your account can reach, so the cleanup that matters most is the one you do in drive.

common questions

what is the difference between the claude for google workspace add-on and the google docs, sheets, and slides connectors?

The add-on puts Claude in a sidebar inside a Google Doc, Sheet, or Slides deck you already have open, where it can see your selection and edit the file in place. The connectors work the other way around: you start in Claude, and Claude creates or edits Google files from the chat. Anthropic released both on October 6, 2026, and both are in beta.

which claude plans can use claude in google docs, sheets, and slides?

Anthropic says Claude for Google Workspace is in public beta on all paid Claude plans. You install the add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner or primary owner has to enable the Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors before members can use them.

can claude change my google sheet or doc without asking me first?

Only if you choose that. The add-on starts in Ask before edits mode, where each change shows up as an approval card and Claude waits for you. A second mode, Accept all edits, lets Claude make ordinary content edits without stopping, though it still pauses on links, outside images, web addresses, and file access. For files that other people rely on, staying on Ask before edits is the safer default.

can claude see every file in my company's google drive once i connect it?

Anthropic says Claude's access through the connectors matches your existing Google sharing permissions. So Claude reaches what your own account can already reach. If your sharing settings are loose, that is worth tidying before you connect, because Claude inherits them as they are.

give claude the formats, not just the files

the add-on is only as good as what you ask it for. the ai builder toolkit is 27 ready claude skills you install once, each one a file you own, so the weekly work runs the same way every time instead of being re-explained in every chat.
